Description:Pyracantha coccinea M.Roem. (Taiwan firethorn) belongs to Rosaceae and takes the name as the tips of the young branches are like thorns. It is an evergreen shrub with round or oval leaves and white flowers. Fruit is born after blossoming and lasts from fall to winter. The efflorescence starts in October and ends in the following January. It is also called Jhuangyuanhong (the red outfit worn by Number One Scholar in the imperial examination in ancient China) as a symbol of success in a government or a competitive examination as well as being promoted in office and becoming rich. The evergreen shrub of Rosaceae family have light or dark green leaves with exquisite and brightly red fruit. Firethorn is another alternative name since the tips of the branches are like thorns.
